“For we are God’s [own] handiwork (His workmanship), recreated in Christ Jesus, [born anew] that we may do those good works which God predestined (planned beforehand) for us [taking paths which He prepared ahead of time], that we should walk in them [living the good life which He prearranged and made ready for us to live].” Ephesians 2:10 Amplified version
On the heels of Ephesians 2:8, 9, because of what God did, we are completely and utterly 100% His! When God created the world, including Adam and Eve, it was all His doing. The earth did not create itself, (despite current theory) nor did Adam and Eve create themselves. We had nothing to do with coming into this world, or with the gifts we have been given. It is all God’s doing. The Creator took the time, even before we were born, and born again, to prepare good things for us to be doing on this earth. It is already done. Whatever you have achieved in the past, He prepared it so that you could do it. Whatever you are doing now, God worked it out ahead of time. Whatever is coming, He has already laid it out for you. I see the dinner all prepared, and on the table waiting for us!
The idea of these good things being prepared for us gives me security, knowing that from start to finish our lives have been thought out by loving God who desires good for us. And these works are ones that are useful, and profitable. They are not deeds that drain us, exhaust us, or, ruin us. No, they are meant to bring more life. I like the idea of walking in them. It is not a sprint, but a steady gait so we can keep our eyes on Jesus. Ever notice how unhappy runners look? (sorry runners)! Every time one passes me while walking, I consider myself lucky to be walking and not running. They are missing all the great smells, small flowers and conversation on the way. When we walk, we have time to know where to go, what to do, and what He is saying to us. These works are ones that He created. God thought of them all and they are meant to fit us exactly. They are safe and secure in Christ, not outside of Him or locked in some cabinet for us to find ourselves. If we get confused
about what to do in this life, look to Jesus – what to do exists in Him and not in us!
Of course we have the position of making choices based on what information we have available to us at any given time. And we can choose to follow His ways or our own. God understands how complex our world can get. He knows how to place us at the right place at the right time and connect us to resources we could never achieve by our own smarts. He alone knows the best thing for us. Let us rest in knowing His mind is great and out of His mind comes great work. We are His hands here on earth but we can rest in His ability to put that work in front of us and give us the strength to complete that work.
